Over 50? Want to be connected?

Over 50? Want to be connected?

Digital Devices

Recipients of our loan devices (iPads and laptop) continue to be supported with weekly one-to-one in-home sessions. It is rewarding to recognise the progress achieved through these opportunities, creating email accounts, and navigating through internet links.  The latest reimposition of restrictions will provide a real test as to how effective these newly acquired skills will be in connecting with the various on-line content and information offered by St. John’s.

Community Engagement

A successful Community Workshop to ‘try one new thing on-line’ was held in late June, taking advantage of the relaxed, but short-lived, Coronavirus restrictions.  Kenneth Rankin and Eric Christoph facilitated the event which attracted the participation of 5 of our own seniors as well as 2 from our local community. Whilst it was not practicable to offer refreshments on this occasion, participants still reported positively on the great learning experience which was conducted in a fun-filled atmosphere.  Attendees were pleasantly surprised to indeed learn something new.

Workshop

If an improvement in coronavirus restrictions evolves, a digital workshop is planned for late August on the topic of electronic greeting cards.  Tentatively this event is planned for Sat. Aug 29th and will run from 10am to 1pm.  Lunch will unfortunately not be provided.  Interested participants are requested to contact Tim to register their intent to attend.

Get Online Week

The Government sponsored Get Online Week initiative as part of the Be Connected program has become a regular event that St. John’s enthusiastically supports.  It is hoped that this grant will once again be made available for us to run an event in the week of 19th and 23rd October.  Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, plans necessarily remain provisional.  Plans will be shared as information becomes available.

An open invitation is extended to all friends of St. John’s to take up the opportunity to engage in any of these opportunities to BE CONNECTED.
